Round I of the Junior Coupe Mondiale
|
The Junior Coupe Mondiale was the first of the seven International Competitions to be held in Victoria, with six candidates playing in Round I.
- Any Baroque
work. (Repeats in Baroque compositions are not required.)
- Own Choice Program:
The candidate must select a program consisting of two (2) pieces,
one piece to be of a slower, lyrical style* and the other piece to
be of a technical virtuosic style**. At least one (1) of these
Own Choice pieces must be an original work for accordion.
* Examples of the slower, lyrical style: Kalina Krasnaia
by Semionov, Romance by Angelis, Vocalise by Rachmaninov, Aria by
Bach etc...
** Examples of the technical virtuosic style: Caprice by Paganini,
a fast Sonata by Scarlatti, Finale of 1st Sonata by Kusjakov etc...
- A minimum of
two (2) different Composers
- Single movements
from cyclic works are acceptable, however a maximum of one movement
of any cyclic work shall be selected. Playing time for Round I: minimum
of 10 minutes and a maximum of 15 minutes. Failure to observe maximum
playing time will result in a mark penalty.
Round I music must be played in one sitting and may be played in any
order. Candidates will be judged equally on each of the three parts
of Round I.

International Competition for Ensemble Music
|
As the International Competitions continued, the second category was the International Competition for Ensemble Music where six competitors competed in a variety of instrumentation. Candidates were required to perform the following program:
- For two (2) to five (5) musicians,
minimum one accordion (e.g., can be multiple accordions, or accordions
with other instruments).
- Ensemble Music competition is for acoustic
instruments (no electronics). All accordions must be acoustic reed
instruments. No MIDI accordions are allowed. One bass instrument may
be amplified; however, the candidate must provide their own amplifier.
- Own Choice Program of concert music
consisting of at least two (2) pieces with contrasting style.
- The competition organizers will not
provide instruments other than a piano tuned to A 442.
- Playing time: minimum 15 minutes to
maximum 20 minutes playing time. Failure to observe minimum or maximum
playing time will result in a mark penalty.
- Marking will take into consideration
program choice, level of playing and ensemble work

Rehearsal of the World Accordion Orchestra VII

Following
the very successful inaugural Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes World Accordion Orchestra debut performance
at the Coupe Mondiale 2007 under the Musical Direction of Joan C. Sommers,
the magnificent staging of the CIA World Accordion Orchestra (WAO) II
in Scotland in 2008, WAO III in Auckland, New Zealand, WAO IV in Varadin,
Croatia, WAO V in Shanghai, China, and WAO VI in Spoleto, Italy, the World Accordion Orchestra VII took to the stage for its Gala performance to be held in Victoria, Canada as part of the 66th Coupe Mondiale Festival.
The WAO VII will perform two pieces which have been chosen very carefully.
The first will be Danse Villageoise by Claude Champagne, arranged and conducted by Maureen Jarosh. The second piece will be Selections from Les Misérables by Claude-Michel Schönberg & Herbert Kretzmer, arranged and conducted by Joan Cochran Sommers. This second piece will also feature the New Zealand tenor, Lionel Reekie, as soloist on one of the pieces. Mr. Reekie has sung this particular piece with several symphony orchestras recently and we are fortunate to have him sing with the WAO VII.

CIA Music Committee Meeting
|
Members of the CIA Music Committee met to discuss matters pertaining to the various categories of CIA Competitions, plans for future enhancements and the promotion of new works for the accordion. Members of the Music Committee meet in person during the CIA Winter and Summer Congress sessions.

Coupe Mondiale Opening Ceremomy
|
The British Columbia Accordion Society, hosts of the 66th Coupe Mondiale in Victoria, BC held their gala Opening Ceremony Concert.
Acting Mayor of the City of Victoria Shellie Gudgeon, David Screech, the Chair, CRD Arts Committee and Raymond Bodell, President of the Confederation Internationale des Accordeonistes gave welcoming speeches prior to the Opening Concert. In addition to the welcome speeches, several awards were presented. The CIA Merit Award was presented to Miljan Bjeletic (pictured below) and Joseph Petric, who accepted his award in a Video thank you greeting as he is currently on tour in Europe.
The CIA Merit Award was established by the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) in at the 31st General Assembly of Delegates held in Baden-Baden, Germany from 6-9 September 1963, under the Presidency of Dr. Hans Buscher (Germany), with the purpose of recognizing those who have contributed significantly to the advancement of the accordion.
Nominations for the CIA Merit Award are made in writing to the CIA General Secretary for review by the CIA Executive Committee with final approval being made by vote of the CIA General Assembly of Delegates.
Recipients who have positively impacted the advancement and awareness of the accordion have represented such diverse areas as artists, teachers, composers, leadership, the media and manufacturing.
The Merit Award Diploma is presented by the CIA with the inscription: "In appreciation for outstanding contributions to the International accordion movement". Now celebrating its 50th year of awards, the CIA Merit Award has been awarded on 92 occasions to recipients from 29 countries.
The BC Accordion Society also presented Leo Niemi from Sudbury, Ontario with their Lifetime Achievement Award in respect for his lifelong work with the accordion as a performer, repairer and he even made from scratch the accordion of Joseph Petric.
