The Beijing Children’s Palace Junior Accordion Orchestra was established in 2013. It is a multipart accordion orchestra with primary and middle school students as its main body. The orchestra has identified effective practice modes and training techniques through six years of exploration, and is determined to continuously recommend excellent members to the Youth Orchestra. The orchestra has participated in the 10 anniversary concert celebrating the establishment of the orchestra, the opening ceremony of the 2015 China Youth Accordion Art Year, the concert of the Chinese Piano Accordion League, and the“Open Music Classes” program at CCTV. It has been invited to perform at the National Centre for the Performing Arts of China, Forbidden City Concert Hall, etc. In view of its achievements, the Beijing Municipal Education Commission has recognized the orchestra as the Sunshine Junior Art Troupe.
Chen Weiliang was born in Beijing in 1970. Under the influence of his family, he has learned accordion from childhood and showed good talents in performance. Ji Yuchen, graduting from the Beijing Institute of Technology with a master’s degree, is now an accordion teacher at the Beijing Children’s Palace. Ji took to the accordion at an early age, and studied under Chinese accordionst and conductor Chen Weiliang. In 1999, he became engaged in accordion ensembles; three years later, he won the third place in the World Ensemble Category of the International Accordion Competition in Castelfidardo (Italy).
He then joined the Beijing Children’s Palace in 2003, and in the same year, he established the Beijing Children’s Palce Baidi Youth Accordion Orchestra and Junior Accordion Orchestra, of which he serves as the conductor. The two orchestras constitute the framework of Beijing Children’s Palace Accordion Orchestra. In practice, Ji pays special attention to exploring multi-part teaching and training methods for students of different ages, and based on practical experience, he compiled basic-level training materials which touch upon elements of ensemble performance, namely, unity in techniques, balance in parts, and harmony in rhythm. Ji also focuses on building team culture and cultiviating team spirit. He is popular with students for his unique sense of humor. Ji once led a delegation to Democratic People’s Republic of Korea for cultural exchanges with teachers and students from the Pyongyang Mangyongdae Children’s Palce and held special conerts there. Over the course of his career, he has been invited to conduct orchestras at the CCTV, the National Center for the Performing Arts, the Forbidden City Concert Hall, the Tianjin Grand Theater, etc. He has, for several times, led the orchestras to participate in municipal-level art performances and achieved outstanding results.
