will become the "World Accordion Capital" as accordionists
and enthusiasts from all over the world converge upon Glasgow to attend
the 2008 Coupe Mondiale - the "World Cup" of accordion championships
- from October 21st - 26th at the Normandy Hotel.
The CIA Coupe Mondiale,
recognized as the most prestigious annual accordion competition of international
scope, takes place in a different country every year, under the auspices
of the Confederation International des Accordeonistes, which is currently
celebrating its 61st anniversary since the first such event, in 1938
in Paris. The Confederation is affiliated with the International Music
Council and UNESCO. This will be the 5th time that this most prestigious
accordion competition has been held in the United Kingdom - following
the events in Brighton (1955), Leicester (1968), Folkestone (1984) and
London (2001) but the first time that the event is held in Scotland.
The Coupe Mondiale attracts accordionists and enthusiasts from all over
the world and across the UK. We are pleased to host such a diversity
of talent in the UK especially in the beautiful surrounds of Scotland
and to again host the Coupe Mondiale" says 2008 Coupe Mondiale
Co-Ordinator Anna Bodell.
Highlights of the
Coupe Mondiale week include:
- Five days /evenings
of accordion entertainment / competitions and concerts.
- Performance
of the CIA World Accordion Orchestra II
- Instrument /
Trade exhibits
- Plus a series
of social receptions with endless entertainment, and late-evening
performances in a lounge setting.
- Sponsors of
the 2008 Coupe Mondiale is the NATIONAL ACCORDION ORGANISATION OF
THE UNITED KINGDOM (NAO) whose has held membership of the CIA since
the Organisation was founded.
Over €10,
000 in cash prizes will be awarded to the winners of the six international
categories, which include:
- 61st Coupe Mondiale
in honor of Graham Romani (1917 - 1993)
- International
Competition for Piano Accordion in honor of Francis Wright (1918 -
1997)
- Junior Coupe
Mondiale in honor of Cyril Pasby (1931 - 2003)
- International
Competition for Virtuoso Entertainment Music in honor of Toralf Tollefsen
(1914 -1994)
- Junior International
Competition for Virtuoso Entertainment Music in honor of Marian Farran
- International
Competition for Ensemble Music in honor of Iris Laurie (1926 - 2006)
In addition to
cash prizes, each first place winner will be featured in a gala finale
concert on Saturday October 26th.
