Members
of the CIA Music Committee have been continually evaluating the program
requirements of the various Coupe Mondiale categories, and in recent
years have established a new format which provides them the opportunity
to promote many new original works for the accordion.
Instead of requiring candidates to perform a Test Piece in the Coupe
Mondiale, the CIA offers a Special Recognition Award for Best New
Original Solo Work, composed in 2010/2011, presented at the Coupe
Mondiale for the first time.
This year four new compositions were presented to be considered
for the Best New Original Work Award, with the Tango-Toccata by Finnish
composer Petri Makkonen being selected as the winner.
Petri Makkonen (right) was born in 1967 and he studied classical accordion
at the Sebelius Academy in Helsinki and has since composed a broad
range of teaching materials for young accordionists including Space
Music, Dance of Four Masters, Songs for Accordion etc...
Petri is renownded for his many concert level works including Disco-Toccata,
1997 CIA Test Piece "The Flight Beyond the Time", Disco-Tango
and now this new work Tango-Toaccata. He currently teaches accordion
at the Conservatory in Kuopio.
